Mind, Body and Spirit

Culture

Yoga is a collection of physical, mental, and spiritual disciplines that have their roots in ancient India. They are meant to calm the mind and help practitioners recognise an objective witness consciousness that is unaffected by mental chatter and everyday suffering.
Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism all have different schools of yoga with different practises and objectives, and both ancient and contemporary yoga is done all around the world.
Although traditional yoga emphasises meditation and detachment from material attachments, the term "yoga" in the West frequently refers to a modern variant of Hatha yoga and a posture-based physical fitness, stress-relief, and relaxation approach consisting mostly of asanas.
Indian gurus brought it to the West after the popularity of Swami Vivekananda's 19th- and 20th-century version of yoga without physical postures. The Yoga Sutras, which Vivekananda brought to the West, gained notoriety in the 20th century once hatha yoga became popular.
